How To Learn ? From Mistake By Diana Laufenberg (2010) [TED Summary]
Diana
Laufenberg discusses her presentation entitled "How to Learn? From
Mistakes." Diana Laufenberg is a teacher who shares some of the things she
learned about how most teachers teach and how most children learn. She told of
her grandmother in the 1930s, when Diana's grandmother was in class, Diana said
that the purpose of going to class was getting information. Students get all
their information from the teacher and keep everything in their brain. When
Diana was at school, information became more accessible in the form of
encyclopedias and textbooks. Diana started teaching in Kansas. After her first
year of teaching, she decided that she needed to change her approach to
teaching. After Diana Laufenberg used traditional pedagogical methods during
her first year of teaching, she realized that learning has changed deeply.
Diana
asked the question, "Are we really comfortable letting the kids
fail?" For Laufenberg, failure is part of teaching and learning. For Diana
as a teacher we must tell the children about the learning process. Children
need to know that it's okay to make mistakes and in doing so they will not
limit what they can learn.
As
teachers, we have to talk to the children about this process so they can let
their ideas run without worry of not being successful. Designing learning to
empower students is not about right and wrong answers, but the reverse is to
extend the scope of their ability to think.
