Using Puppet As A Media For Teaching Speaking Narrative Text [part I]
1. Background of study
Teaching
language needs good and interesting media. Media used in the teaching learning
activity will keep the learner focus on the teacher, thus the classroom will be
on teacher’s control. The media used should be effective and interesting; Suyanto
(2007: 6.4) said that the use of effective and interesting media in teaching
can help the students understand the material easily.
English
teaching and learning have the goal of focusing students so that they are able
to use English for communication and as a tool for furthering their studies. In
foreign language teaching and learning, ability to speak is the most essential skill since it is the basic for communication and it is the most
difficult skill. Speaking is one of
the important skills to be mastered. This skill is one of tool’s
communications. Speaking is an interactive process of constructing meaning that
involves producing and receiving and also processing information (Brown,
1994:28). Speaking is a process to convey and sharing ideas and feelings orally.
Speaking involved some elements such as accuracy, appropriateness, fluency and vocabulary
building. All of those elements need to be mastered by the students. Harmer
(2001: 269) states that the ability to speak fluently emphasizes not only on
the knowledge of language features but also on how the ability to process
information on the spot.
There
many kind of text that can be used such as narrative, descriptive, explanation,
recount, report, etc. There are very usefull for the teacher to achives the instructional
goals of teaching learning process and they can also be interesting for the
students. In this paper the writer focus on the narrative text, by using the
narrative text as a genre for teaching speaking, the students will be more
interested and easy to studied because narrative text tells us about
interesting story that can make the students enjoy in the class. Anderson
(1997: 8) stated that narrative is a piece of text tellsa story and in doing,
entertains or informs the reader or listener.
In this paper the writer choose the puppet as a media to
teach speaking in narrative text. The teacher can take many benefits of puppet.
Puppet displayed in accordance with the text that is played so that students
will be very helpful in understanding the contents of narrative text, puppet is
an interesting visualization that can describe the contents of the story
directly. It can be concluded that puppet show can be used as an alternative
media in teaching speaking narrative texts. Nelson (1998:27) points out that
demonstration-performance include 4 types of phases. Those are: explanation,
demonstration, student performance and instructor supervision, evaluation.
According to Bil Baird in Greder (2013) “A puppet is an inanimate figure
that is made to move by human effort before an audience. It is the sum of these
qualities that uniquely defines the puppet.
