Using Puppet As A Media For Teaching Speaking Narrative Text [Part III]

1.      Discussion

1.1. Speaking

There are four skills such as listening, speaking, reading and writing that are thought in English. Speaking seems to be the most important skills of all the four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) because people who know a language are usually referred to as speakers of that language (Ur, 1996). The major goal of all English language teaching should be to give learners the ability to use English effectively, accurately in communication (Davies & Pearse, 1998). However, not all language learners after many years studying English can communicate fluently and accurately because they lack necessary knowledge. Speaking is considered the most important skills, because there is an assumption that students must learn and speak English fluently in this globalization era. In junior high school speaking should be learn and should be practicingin the classroom. The students must try to speak in English lesson to make them to communicatein English. O’Malley and Pierce (1996) say that speaking seems to be an important skill that a learner should acquire. It is very important in order to enable students to communicate effectively through oral language because the disability of the students to speak may lead them to be unable to express their ideas even in a simple form of conversation.

Considering how important a teacher should make his or her lesson classroom activity enjoyable, active, secure, and full of more exposure to language input and more choice to practice the languages, he or she needs to develop his or her teaching techniques and use a media . One of the media to be used in teaching the speaking skill is using puppet as a media.
